Applying for a UK passport in Yemen
The Consular Section of the British Embassy in Sana'a processes British passport applications.
- What to submit
To apply for a UK passport in Yemen you must submit the following compulsory documents to prove identity and nationality entitlement include:
- Original full/long UK or local birth/adoption/registration/ naturalisation certificate for child;
- If applicable, parents’ full/long UK birth certificate or British registration/naturalisation certificate;
- If applicable, father’s civil marriage certificate and evidence of termination of any previous marriages;
- Current or previous passports held by applicant including any passport s/he was included on and/or used to travel;
- Photo id of parent applying
- Local birth certificates and other documents will need to be translated into English by a sworn translator and stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in country to prove it is genuine. You will need to supply 2 photographs one of which is countersigned.
- Applicants can be processed by personally attending the Embassy or through any fedex office (Head Office based in Sana'a, Hadda st. next to Emirates airlines office - Tel 01 440170).
- You must be residing in Yemen at the time of your application
- You must provide us with an address and a phone number in Yemen where we can contact you.
Processing your passport application
We aim to deliver our services within 10 working days for any straightforward application. First time application tend to take longer as most of these applications have to be referred to the UK and in some cases, interviews are conducted and or DNA testing requested.
Our staff will not be able to process your application or there may be a delay issuing your passport if:
- you have used the wrong form or completed it incorrectly
- you do not provide the correct fee
Useful information when applying for a passport in Yemen
- Payments are made in local currency (Yemeni Rials) only and made in draft cheque made payable to the British Embassy, Sana'a. In some cases, cash will also be acceptable.
- First time passport applicants aged 16 years and over, British Overseas Citizens and British Protected Persons renewing their passports should plan on having to attend our offices for an interview.
- Some other passport applicants may also be required to attend interviews at the discretion of the British Embassy on a case by case basis.
- We recommend customers to submit their applications at least 3 weeks before they require their passport to travel.
- You should not make any travel arrangements until the new passport is received, as the Embassy cannot be responsible for costs incurred as a result of disrupted travel plans.

Note: the Embassy reserves the right to request additional documentation or other evidence of entitlement to passport facilities - this includes DNA testing (all costs are borne by the applicants). All documentation provided must be translated into English if not originally written in that language.
